History of Casino
The word “Casino” in its original meaning meant something along the line of a small villa or a summerhouse slash pavilion which existence was for pleasure, it was normal for it to be build on the grounds of a larger villa located on the Italian mainland or palazzo. These are some examples of existing casinos at for instance Villa Giulia and Villa Farnese. Nowadays in Italy, this word has the meaning that has more in common with a bordello (”casa chiusa”, literally “closed house”), if you mean the gambling house then you have to spell it casinò with an accent.
The first known of the casinos to us, was established in Venice early 17th century. During the 19th century, the word “casino” also started to include multiple public buildings and more pleasurable activities were possible because of it, including gambling but also sports. A fine example of sucha casino is the Newport Casino located in Newport, Rhode Island.
As such not every one of the countless casinos were used for just gaming. The Copenhagen Casino for instance was a theatre, known for the mass public meetings in its hall during the 1848 Revolution that made Denmark a constitutional monarchy. Up to 1937 it stayed as being a well-known Danish theatre. The Hanko Casino located in Hanko, Finland - is but one of the town’s most conspicuous landmarks - is never been used for gambling. On the contrary, it is a banquet hall for Russian nobility which frequented this place, also a spa resort in the late 1800s, only now it is being used as a restaurant.
